I was visiting Adelaide and wandering through the magnificent Central Markets when I discovered Adelaide's China Town. Across the road from the Central Markets on Grote Street is a fantastic Asian Market called Mariana Markets. I was specifically looking for mandarins (unfortunately they were out of season) but my aunty had been in a coma for 8 months and when she awoke all she wanted were mandarins. Regular super-markets including the Central Markets weren't carrying stock but low and behold when I searched through Mariana Markets I just couldn't believe my luck.
Granted, mandarins aren't an Asian food but it was my search that lead me to this wonderfully tantalising array of fresh Asian produce and products - items I could easily find in Sydney's China Town but had never seen in Adelaide before. Fruit, Vegetables and nuts are fresh and plentiful and unbelievably cheap being easily located on the ground level of the supermarket - there is also a section offering freshly squeezed juices on site. They even have a meat section.
Vegetarian and Gluten Free and Organic produce is also readily available. Upstairs you can find grocery staples of noodles, rice and sauces, dumplings and meats. They even have cooking utensils. The staff are great and happy to give you a little sample to try.
Mariana Markets also have a Facebook presence and often announce great specials for the day.
This place is fantastic and I now always visit this place when I'm in Adelaide. My mum who lives in Adelaide now regularly shops here because of the diversity of food she can buy and the prices being so cheap. The best thing about this place is the variety of produce available, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean.
Mariana Markets at 72 Grote Street is my supermarket of choice for Asian produce and groceries.
